Ryan Helmick, MD Ryan Helmick, MD Chief Resident
Ryan Helmick, MD is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio and alumnus of Saint Xavier High School.  He continued his education at Rice University in Houston and The Ohio State University College of Medicine before returning to Cincinnati as a resident in the Jewish Hospital Surgery program in July, 2007. Dr. Helmick is now in his fifth year of surgical training and has accepted a critical care fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine to begin in July.  Current research projects include a retrospective review of geriatric surgical patients and a case series of whipple procedures preceded by gastric bypass is currently under review.  A project reviewing the characteristics of trauma patients who require tracheostomy and gastrostomy tube placement is currently underway.  Surgical interests are many and include complex laparoscopy, surgical critical care and solid organ transplantation.
Farshad Farnejad Farshad Farnejad, MD Chief Resident
I was born in Iran and grew up in Virginia.  I graduated from Virginia Tech and went to the Medical College of Virginia for a graduate degree in Public Health.  I attended St. George’s University School of Medicine.  Currently I am in my last year of training and had secured a Surgical Critical Care fellowship at Johns Hopkins to begin July, 2012.
Hiral Patel, MD Hiral Patel, MD PGY-4
I am originally from Georgia and went to Emory University for my undergraduate degree.  I received my medical degree from St. George's University located in Grenada in 2008.  I have several areas of research interest, one of which includes metabolic outcomes of bariatric surgery.
Ranjodh Singh, MD Ranjodh Singh, MD PGY-4
I was born and raised in India. I moved to US in 2003 and accepted to medical school at St. Kitts and Nevis. After successful completion of medical school, I matched into the Jewish Hospital.  I am interested in doing a colorectal fellowship upon completion of my residency. I am currently involved in number of research projects. I have three papers under peer review. I also have prospective randomized, multicenter trial looking at AF rates after incorporation of Cormatrix during pericardial closure in surgeries involving pericardial opening such as CABG, Valvular surgery. I am also part of some other studies that are at their data collection stages.
Benjamin Stivers, MD Benjamin Stivers, MD PGY-3
I am a native of Frankfort, KY. I moved to Louisville, KY for college, graduate and medical school attending the University of Louisville. I matched into the Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati Surgical Residency program in 2009. I am currently interested in pursuing a career in General Surgery, although I continue to keep and open mind about fellowship possibilities. I am currently finishing a research project on the topic of surgery in the octogenerian patient, and have a prospective project in single site robotic surgery.  I am also very interested in how residency training has changed in the past ten to fifteen years and the impact these changes have made on surgical on education.
Dawn Davis Dawn Davis, MD PGY-3
I was raised in suburban St. Louis.  I obtained a combined B.A/M.D. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  I am currently interested in pursuing fellowships in burns and critical care.  My current research is centered on appropriate maintenance of the airway in burn patients.
Matthew Musielak, MD Matthew Musielak, MD PGY-2
After obtaining my undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois-Chicago in Biomedical Engineering, I attended Ross University School of Medicine in Portsmouth, Dominica. Currently I have several research projects in motion involving laparoscopic bands, laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. These procedures and the field of bariatrics are interests that I plan on pursuing at the tenure of my residency when I plan on moving onto a career in private practice.
Amir Aryaie, MD Amir Aryaie, MD PGY-2
I am from Atlanta GA. After graduating from university of Georgia I went to Ross University for Medical School. I matched into the Jewish Hospital in 2010.  I like pretty much all areas of General surgery however I have a special interest in Colorectal and breast surgery. I just finished a research on use of “prophylactic Antibiotic to reduce surgical site infection in varicose vein surgeries” which got presented at SVS in 2011. I am currently working on a research project regarding Robotic surgery and its learning curve.
Kaitlin Herlad, DO Kaitlin Herald, DO PGY-1 (Preliminary)
I was born and raised in a suburb outside of Cleveland, OH.  After I realized how much I needed some sunshine I attended the University of Richmond for my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry.  From there I attended medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, PA.  I matched at the Jewish Hospital for preliminary surgery and the University of Texas- Houston for Anesthesiology.  Further fellowship opportunities after this may include pediatrics or critical care.  My research interests are directed in the field of anesthesiology and airway management challenges for individuals with sleep apnea.
Sepehr Lalezari Sepehr Lalezari, MD PGY-1 (Categorical)
I was born in Tehran, Iran and moved to America when I was four years old. I grew up in Los Angeles, CA and attained a degree in neuroscience from UCLA. I am very interested in education and thus took a year off to teach high school biology for the Los Angeles Public School system before attending medical school. Although I plan to seek fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery, I hope to always be involved in residency training.
Elizabeth Hartman Elizabeth Hartman, MD PGY-1 (Preliminary)
I am a native of Colorado Springs, Colorado.  I attended undergrad at Cedarville University and graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  I am excited to join the Jewish Hospital Surgical Residency this year.  Currently, I am interested in a career in general surgery.  In 2005, I spent the year in Shell Ecuador working in a community hospital.  I would love to incorporate international medical aide in my future surgical practice.  I am currently involved in a research project evaluating how surgical technique of pericardial closure affects the post-op complication of atrial fibrillation.
Nathan Roberts Nathan Roberts, MD PGY-1 (Categorical)
I am a native of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  I received my BA from the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio.  After a few years of working various jobs, I earned my MD from St. George University in Granada.  Minimally invasive surgery is my greatest area of interest; however, I am open to all aspects of general surgery.  Currently, I am working with some of my colleagues on various research projects.
